Give Your Family Peace of Mind By Organizing Important Papers in Madison, WI
How do I organize my important papers so my children have access to them after I die?
I cannot stress the importance of getting your personal affairs in order. This process is important for everyone, but even more important for those who often find themselves living away from family and friends. Throughout your life, you have tried to protect your loved ones and now you have a chance to help them at a time when they will need that help the most. Taking the time to plan now and record information for your loved ones will be the most unselfish gifts of love you can give.
Here is a system that requires a three-ring notebook with dividers, paper, three-ring punch and a pen. A computer is helpful if you have one.
Gather the necessary information: Use this list as an idea starter
- Pre-paid funeral plan information, wills, property titles, advance directives, powers of attorney
- Life, auto and homeowners insurance policies; agent names, phone numbers
- Account numbers for credit cards, banks, credit unions, stocks and mutual funds, and name of financial advisor.
- Names and addresses of your accountant, attorney, executor, heirs
- List the contents of your safe or safety deposit box(es) and where located. Provide combination for the safe.
- Marriage/birth/divorce certificates
- List of monthly payments or premiums due.
Copy and insert in your notebook. Return the original document to its location. Date each page you insert. Most important, regularly review the book, pull outdated pages and replace with current information.
